The Glass Passenger
Jack’s Mannequin has a new CD out, and it is brilliant! This is one of the very rare times where as the artist gets older, the music gets better. By all means Everything in Transit was good, but The Glass Passenger exceeds all expectations. I like every single song on the album, which is a nice change of pace considering how picky and erratic my music tastes are.
Caves and Bloodshot are, if I HAVE to chose, my favorite songs on the album. Caves is a long song, a little longer than 8 minutes, with a very unusual beat and almost feels like 2 songs in one. Bloodshot is not quite as deep as Caves is but still very good. It’s about getting high, there’s no questioning that, but more than that it has a great chorus.
If you are going to buy one album this week, definitely consider The Glass Passenger.
(Or Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist which has a completely different tone but is still amazing :])
10 Years
It was 10 years ago that Mathew Shepard was brutally murdered by a group of boys in the middle of a field because he was gay.
It’s weird to think that is had already been 10 years since this awful injustice.
He is the reason why I don’t stand for ignorance and why I will never back down. Why I will never stand for discrimination and hate. Why I have the strength to get through every single day with no regrets.
My thoughts are to you Mathew. May you rest in peace and be comforted that we are out here fighting for you and Lawrence King.
Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist
Is quite possibly one of the most endearing films I have ever seen. I absolutely love this movie, and since I know this film will be compared to Juno(although they are very different films) I have to say I liked Nick and Norah’s much more than Juno. And it’s not that Juno was a bad movie, quite the contrary actually, but it doesn’t have the same spark that this film does.
You can say all you want that Michael Cera keeps playing the same roles over and over, but I don’t care. That isn’t a bad things because he plays every single one of his roles perfectly. He is the king of awkward moments and incomplete sentences. The chemistry he manages to have with everyone else on screen is unbelievable in every film he is in. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who isn’t much of a fan of his, but that’s a different story. The fact is, Cera rocked this film. Same goes for the rest of the cast. Kat Denning’s was such a contrast to every other character in the film and it plays out so well. Cera and Denning have this chemistry that is so subtle yet real and that significantly adds to the entire tone of the movie.
Ari Graynor, who plays Norah’s best friend Caroline, had to have been drunk while shooting this film or she is the best actor that I have seen acting drunk. It’s almost never that I would call a performance like this brilliant, but it was brilliant. I can’t get over how she did it.
And I have to touch on Nick’s queer band mates, the Jerk-offs. Those 3 guys were definitely very good supporting actors, but I feel like they had a deeper purpose that propelled this movie to great status. These band mates helped ground this film into reality. This wasn’t just some sappy love story with great chemistry between two people, this is an ensemble cast because without one character the movie would not be as good as it is. The band mates though really touch on the idea that life is more subtle than a guy in a queer band. In my opinion it really helps shed light on the fact that there’s more to people than just these general archetypes portrayed in most films.
As you can tell I can hardly contain myself! This film is, for me, without flaw. It’s a movie about hope. About the idea that every day can turn out to be your best day ever. I have not stopped thinking about this film since I saw it on Friday and it never fails to put a smile on my face. I loved this movie and I believe it is this generation’s Breakfast Club or 16 Candles which also are about characters and how they mesh together.
Note: The soundtrack is the perfect compilation of obscure indie bands. Meaning, it’s very good.
Hello world!
Welcome to my new blog!
Yes, I know this is like my 3rd or 4th. Clearly, I have issues.
I was using Tumblr for awhile, and then I was tossing around the idea of switching to blogger, but neither have the feature-set that I like. So here I am again, back at wordpress.
I hope you enjoy everything I have to say(a lot) and don’t get to offended.
